Pastoral country lanes and cycling the rugged coast of the Bay of Fundy highlight our tour of the Evangeline Trail. We cover some of the best bike touring routes that Nova Scotia has to offer. Whether your interest is history, culture, cuisine or just plain riding your bike, this tour has something for everyone.
We start in the tiny community of Smith Cove on the shore of the Annapolis Basin and from there, bike our way through the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia's richest farmland and the birth place of the Acadian people. These hardy immigrants from France established the first permanent European settlements in North America but were later expelled by the British. Some ended up in Louisiana to become known as Cajuns. Opportunities to learn about this rich history abound as we visit the Habitation at Port Royal and Grand Pre, each designated as National Historic Sites.
Little villages dot the landscape and we'll spend two nights in Annapolis Royal designated Cultural Capital of Canada in 2005. It's a charming town with unique shops, a lovely streetscape and the best public gardens in Nova Scotia. On to the bustling college town of Wolfville where we can take in a play at the Atlantic Theatre Festival, tour some of the area's burgeoning wineries and dine at two of the region's finest restaurants, Tempest and Acton's Grill.
Nature at its most scenic surrounds us with views of the world's highest tides and a bird’s eye view of the entire valley from the Blomidon look off. Our inns are both luxurious and unique. Remote fishing villages with lobster boats lying on the sea bed at low tide, the old ship building port of Bear River and mile upon mile of quiet country back roads combine to make this a "classic" bike trip.
Start and finish the tour in Halifax (easily reached by direct flights from New York or Boston) or take the ferry from Bar Harbour.
