Daily Itinerary
|
|
Day One |
Arrival in Heraklion, Crete, at Atlantis Hotel (A Class). Orientation, tour overview, and reception.

Day Two |
Walking tour of Heraklion. Guided tour of archeological museum and Knossos. Afternoon ride to Lassithi Plateau. (37 miles)

Day Three |
Cycle through traditional village of Krassi with its centuries old plane tree in the town square. Ride near the sea before invigorating climb through villages overlooking Potami River Valley on return to Lassithi Plateau.

Day Four |
Ride from Lassithi Plateau to Ierapetra. Old villages precede an invigorating climb through foothills of the Dikti mountains, followed by descent to Libyan Sea. (60 miles)

Day Five |
Ierapetra to Matala. Coastal views of the Libyan Sea, then an exhilarating climb to Ano Viannos, flanking the south side of Mt. Dikti. Ride through Plain of Messara to Matala, made famous by its caves, and as a hangout for 1960’s hippies. (77 miles)

Day Six |
Matala - Kamares Valley Loop Ride. Cycle the Mt. Ida Massif. First climb to the center of the island, then cycle along the flank of Mt. Ida to village of Kamares, famous for ancient pottery. Shorter option to archeological sites of Phaestos and Gortys or a 3 hour beach walk. (30 or 63 miles)

Day Seven |
Matala to Spili via the Amari Valley. 6,000 feet of climbing takes you through a valley noted for fierce resistance in WW II. (62 miles)

Day Eight |
Spili to Chora Sfakion and Agios Ioannis. Cross to the south coast via a spectacular canyon; visit Frangokostello, 14th century fortress renowned for ghostly sightings of fierce patriots. Climb into the White Mountains. (36 or 61 miles)

Day Nine |
|
Chora Sfakion to Almyrida. Climb from the sea up through 3 remote villages as you reach the crest overlooking Souda Bay. Then descend to Almyrida on the northern shore. (43 miles) |

Day Ten |
|
Transfer to coastal town of Sougia. Climb to Omalos Plateau and skirt city of Chania on the way back to Almyrida. (65 miles) Or option to hike the Samarian Gorge (5-6 hr. hike) |

Day Eleven |
Morning visit to tour old Venetian quarter and renowned harbor at Chania. Option to enjoy the splendid beachfront along Crete’s northern shore or ride in the area. (15 mi.)

Day Twelve |
Tour ends in Almyrida after breakfast.
|
*Couples with different levels of cycling ability may choose different trips (Land of Zorba or Extreme Crete) with the exception of day 8.
